How to Install a Turbo Speed Sensor on Your HPT Turbocharger

Turbo speed sensors are a great tool for monitoring turbocharger performance, but not every customer chooses to run one. Because of this, HPT Turbochargers does not pre-drill the speed sensor port on every turbocharger we build.

The good news? Installing a speed sensor is quick and easy.

What You'll Need

  • 1/4" drill bit

  • Drill

  • Turbo speed sensor

Installation Instructions

The speed sensor location is already cast into the turbocharger housing. To prepare the port, simply use a 1/4" drill bit and carefully drill through approximately 1/8" of material.

Once you've drilled through the material, the speed sensor should thread into the port without issue. That's it—your turbo is now ready for speed sensor installation and data logging.

Why Run a Turbo Speed Sensor?

A turbo speed sensor allows you to monitor the actual shaft speed of your turbocharger. This information can be valuable when:

  • Optimizing turbocharger performance

  • Preventing overspeed conditions

  • Fine-tuning boost control strategies

  • Collecting data for race or dyno applications

While many racers and tuners benefit from speed sensor data, not every application requires it, which is why we leave the port undrilled unless requested.
