Before last weekend kicked off, we got a message from Shaun Trimarco that had us all excited:
“Hoping to push our standing half mile record for a fox body to over 200mph this weekend at the Marion Indiana Airstrip Attack!”
Then, bright and early Sunday morning, the follow-up came in:
“We did it! Fastest standing half mile fox body in the world. A pair of HPT F3 8280s Turbochargers were doing work!!!”
Shaun Trimarco’s car isn’t just a record-breaker—it’s a true street car. Built around a 1990 Fox Body Mustang, it weighs in at 3,850 pounds and still has power steering, air conditioning, a back seat, a radio, and a full 3.5” over-the-axle aluminum exhaust. It’s the kind of ride that can destroy records on the runway and take the family out afterward.
Under the hood is a 398” small block Ford with Twisted Wedge heads, a solid roller cam, a custom ITB intake, and a custom air-to-water intercooler. A Ford AOD automatic transmission puts the power down, all controlled by a FuelTech FT600 and tuned by Don Bailey. On track, it runs VP C16; on the street, it sips 93 pump gas. All machining, welding, and fabrication were done in-house by Shaun and his team. Based on fuel consumption, the setup is estimated to be making 1,900–2,000 horsepower.
Of course, the powerplant is boosted by a pair of our HPT F3 8280 turbochargers — doing exactly what they were built to do: make big, reliable power.
Shaun’s 1990 Fox Body isn’t just quick—it’s officially the fastest standing half-mile Fox Body Mustang in the world, clocking over 200 MPH at the Marion, Indiana Airstrip Attack. To put this into perspective, the previous bests for Fox Bodies in the half-mile hovered around the 190–195 MPH range. Shaun didn’t just edge past the record—he smashed it.
A major part of that leap? A turbo upgrade that changed the game.
Shaun swapped out a pair of competitor 7675 Gen 1 turbos with 0.96 A/R turbine housings for a set of our HPT F3 8280s, equipped with 1.24 A/R housings. The result? Identical spool, significantly reduced back pressure, and an estimated 300 more horsepower at the same boost level. That’s the kind of efficient, reliable power our turbos are built for.
What’s next for Trimarco and his Mustang? He’s gunning for a 7-second quarter mile and high 4s in the eighth. And after that? A little well-earned downtime:
“Take my family out for ice cream in it!”
